Training\u00a0<strong>1,300 humanitarian and health professionals<\/strong>\u00a0by 2030 in its first\u00a0phase, and\u00a0aligned with the \u2018training ending with employment\u2019 approach, the hub\u2019s first campus, to be initially based in Egypt, seeks to focus on the emergency response in\u00a0<strong>Gaza<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The signing was announced in Lyon, France, during the\u00a0<strong>One Health Summit<\/strong>, a high-level international gathering\u00a0convened\u00a0by French President Emmanuel Macron.<\/p>\n<p>There is an acute and urgent need for trained humanitarians in MENA at a time of regional conflict. According to the United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), over\u00a0<strong>588 humanitarian aid workers have been killed in Gaza<\/strong>\u00a0since October 2023,1\u00a0and over\u00a0<strong>280 paramedics and health workers have been killed in Lebanon\u00a0<\/strong>during the major escalations in 2024 and 2026. Severe cuts to overseas aid funding have dismantled capacity, including training, in frontline agencies of the UN and other humanitarian actors.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the need for aid in MENA has risen dramatically. At the start of 2026, the region already accounted for 24% of global humanitarian need, with over 58 million people\u00a0requiring\u00a0urgent\u00a0assistance\u00a0(UN OCHA, 2026). These figures predate the recent escalation of hostilities in March 2026, which has further worsened the humanitarian situation. In Lebanon alone, over 1.2 million people have been newly displaced, creating an immediate emergency far beyond the\u00a0initial\u00a0projections for the year.<\/p>\n<p>A global leader in training provision to the international humanitarian community for more than 40 years,\u00a0<strong>Bioforce<\/strong>\u00a0stands to lead the\u00a0M\u00e9rieux-Jameel Hub, with intended joint support from the\u00a0<strong>M\u00e9rieux\u00a0Foundation<\/strong>, an independent foundation created in 1967\u00a0specialised\u00a0in fighting infectious diseases in resource-limited countries, and\u00a0<strong>Community Jameel<\/strong>, a non-profit\u00a0organisation\u00a0advancing science and learning for communities to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>Operating from Beirut, Lebanon, and with a Gaza campus initially operational in Egypt, the hub aims to collaborate with a growing network of universities, training institutions, and humanitarian\u00a0organisations\u00a0across Egypt, Iraq, Jordan,\u00a0Syria\u00a0and Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>Combining in-person, digital, and intensive, short-term campus models, the\u00a0M\u00e9rieux-Jameel Hub\u00a0seeks\u00a0to offer both short and long courses leading to accredited certification.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"container-1440\">\n\t<div class=\"section-textriche\">\n\t\t<h2 class=\"title-h2\"><\/h2>\n\t\t<p><strong>Dorothee Lintner, Director General of Fondation\u00a0M\u00e9rieux<\/strong>, said:\u00a0\u201cThe creation of the\u00a0Bioforce-MENA\u00a0M\u00e9rieux-Jameel Hub marks a decisive step in\u00a0M\u00e9rieux\u00a0Foundation\u2019s long-standing commitment to the Middle East and North Africa. By working with a broad spectrum of partners, from local NGOs to major universities, we ensure that those closest to the crisis have the training and authority to act effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"container-1440\">\n\t<div class=\"section-textriche\">\n\t\t<h2 class=\"title-h2\"><\/h2>\n\t\t<p><strong>The\u00a0Bioforce\u00a0MENA\u00a0M\u00e9rieux\u2011Jameel Hub<\/strong>\u00a0seeks\u00a0to build on Community Jameel\u2019s ongoing support to strengthen humanitarian action and the effectiveness of emergency response during crises. Since 2023, in response to the emergency in Gaza, Community Jameel has supported Save the Children, Imperial College London and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityjameel.org\/news\/save-the-children-egypt-gaza-first-responders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Egyptian Ambulance Authority<\/a>\u00a0to deliver care to blast-injured children, newborn babies, including pre-term babies, pregnant women and new mothers evacuated for urgent medical attention from Gaza to Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>Community Jameel has also partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/jameel-institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the\u00a0Jameel Institute<\/a>\u00a0at Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, to launch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityjameel.org\/news\/new-global-initiative-to-offer-crucial-insights-to-international-agencies-and-transform-humanitarian-response-in-conflict-zones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the\u00a0Jameel Institute Realtime Intelligent Support for Emergencies\u00a0(RISE)<\/a>. The platform delivers real-time data and predictive modeling on injuries, malnutrition,\u00a0mortality\u00a0and vaccination planning to guide humanitarian responses in conflict-affected settings, such as Gaza and Sudan.
